History

 

The history of the Australian Space Design Competition can be traced back to the very first Australian interest in the International Space Settlement Design Competition.  Since 2002 there have been four Australian teams to compete at the prestigious ISSDC, a trend which is now to continue thanks to the finalist berth reserved for the ASDC champion.  For an overview of Australian involvement in the world of International Space Settlement Competition’s, and the establishment of the Australian Space Design Competition, please see below.

 

 
2002

September: The first Australian Team to ever enter the ISSDC Preliminary round begins work on the 2002/03 competition in Brisbane.

2003

May: The Brisbane team is selected as one of eight ISSDC finalists.

July: The Brisbane team becomes the first southern hemisphere team to ever compete in the ISSDC
finals, held at the Kennedy Space Centre in the USA.

September: No Australian involvement in the 2003/04 ISSDC Preliminary Round.
2004
September: A second team from Brisbane enters the 2004/05 ISSDC Preliminary Round.
2005

February: Mark Shaw floats the idea of establishing an Australian semi-finals round, in response to the establishment of the Asian Regional Space Settlement Design Competition (ARSSDC).

May: The 04/05 team are invited to the ISSDC finals as special participants to complement numbers from the first ever Romanian team.

July: The 04/05 team compete at the ISSDC Finals, and definite plans are made with ISSDC officials to establish the ASDC.

October: St Laurence’s College (Brisbane, Australia) enter the 2005/06 ISSDC Preliminary Round.

2006

January: The ASDC is officially founded, with Mark Shaw the founding Chairman.
A timetable of events is established and plans laid for the inaugural ASDC competition.
Sponsors in both private industry and all levels of Australian government are approached for sponsorship.

April: The St Laurence’s College team is selected as one of eight ISSDC Finalists.

July: The St Laurence’s team finish a close second at the Johnson Space Centre in Texas, USA.

September: The ASDC is officially inaugurated with an officially opening ceremony.
Teams from across QLD are invited to enter the preliminary round.

2007

January: Inaugural ASDC Finals round, held at UQ St Lucia.
SLC team with the Inaugural competition and are guaranteed a position at the ISSDC finals.

June: 2nd year of ASDC officially begins in term two.

July: SLC team, plus students from StAAGS and AHS chosen to complement numbers from smaller US teams, travel to the ISSDC finals.

2008
January: 2nd Annual ASDC Finals Round, held at UQ St Lucia.
Crux Engineering win the Finals and are selected as ASDC representatives to compete at the ISSDC Finals in July.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CRUX ENGINEERING COMPANY, WHO HAVE WON THE 2007/2008 AUSTRALIAN SPACE DESIGN DESIGN COMPETITION FINAL!

HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND'S ST LUCIA CAMPUS IN LATE JANUARY 2008, CRUX WON IN A CLOSE RACE AGAINST 3 OTHER COMPANIES.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE ST LAURENCE'S COLLEGE TEAM WHO WILL BE TRAVELLING TO THE JOHNSON SPACE CENTRE IN JULY 2008 TO COMPETE AS ASDC CHAMPIONS IN THE ISSDC FINALS.
